Dear Barbara,
Our sadness for you, your children, and Dan’s family is so deep and profound. We keep asking ourselves how this could happen and of course, there is no answer. Dan was such a “good guy” and such a loving husband, father and son. It must be impossible to imagine your life without him because he was your life and your love. But, he will live on in your heart, your memories your children and all the people he touched in his full but all too brief life.
We will pray for all of you.
With Love and Deepest Sympathy,
Uncle Dan and Sandie

Barbara, Taylor, Nate and Rachel,
Our hearts are broken at the loss of our dear friend and neighbor, although we are truly more like family. These past 8 years of living next door were the best ever and we will forever cherish all the memories we have. So many wonderful days and nights of hanging out with you guys, having our babies together…We have been extremely blessed to be apart of the Slarve’s lives. Dan’s generousity at helping us at a moments notice, bringing us his latest and greatest dish, I could go on and on.
We are here for you for the long haul, because you are our family. We love you dearly.

To the Family,
Richard, Renee, Barbara, and the children-
I am one of Richard’s (Dan’s father) many first cousins. Ah, Danny, I hardly knew ye! Living on the east coast,
opportunities were few and while we did meet, it was seldom. Such sorrow is so hard to bear. My sadness joins that of many others, my prayers, too will be offered for the health and well-being of the family. Your many friends and your large family are evidence of the impact and the imprint you have left.
I will always regret not being able to know you. Love and support to your loved ones, to Barbara and the children.
Sylvia
Dearest Barbara and children,
We are so sad to hear of Dan’ s passing yesterday. What a terrible loss to you and everyone who knows you.
1 Corinthians 10:13 tells us that “No test has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tested beyond what you are able, but with the test will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
You will all get through this with God’s help.
Psalms 18:2 “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
With love and prayers,

We saw how loving a father, husband, son and brother Dan was when we visited our cousins Richard and Renee this past December from our CT home. And Dan was a great cook! His loss is an unfathomable tragedy. May his name and imprint forever be a blessing to the family and all who knew him. We pray for strength and forbearance for Barbara and the children and the rest of his close family.

Nancy Ericksen and family
Mike called from Cairo two days ago to give me and Aeron this sad news. I am so sorry, I know what it’s like to have someone young and vital go so suddenly and unexpectedly.
One thing in particular comes to my mind about Daniel. The very last time I saw him was the day before we all moved to Tennessee when the family all came and visited us in Forestville. Danny insisted that we all get a picture of the whole family together, even though we were all distracted with all of the less formal goodbyes, so he got us all pulled together into one place for the photo. This is the kind of person he was, his family came first and he loved them. Well, we all loved Danny, too.
Hello Barbara:
I’m so very sorry to hear about your loss. Thank you so much for keeping all of us posted. Sherry McCarthy mentioned you have a lot of support. You have such a beautiful family. If you need free child care this summer for any reason, please e mail me: jggaters@aol.com, I’d be happy to help out this summer.

I know I don’t have to tell you what a great guy Danny was. It still doesn’t seem real to me, so I can’t even begin to imagine what you all are going through. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I am deeply sorry for your loss, although sorry just doesn’t seem like enough. I wish you all the strength you need to get through this time. I’m so thankful we were able to visit with Danny during our trip last summer. My heart goes out to you.
Love, Samantha
Our prayers are with you at this very sad and difficult time…
We are grieving with you…Dan has left a legacy on the earth in the form of his three children, his friends, neighbors and extended family…He will not be forgotten…You will see him daily in the kids…treasure all your memories…you can never lose those…put your trust and faith in the Lord…you need Him now like never before…He can’t change your circumstances but He is forever with you and he will never leave you nor forsake you…He suffers with you and your family…He is the Dad now to your kids…You are so blessed with the friends and family you have and how they are already taking care of so many of your practical needs and will continue to do so…so, let your tears flow, those are healing…We love you lots…Tim, Betsy, Tammie and Katie

We are so sorry for your loss and realize that there are no words that can ease your pain right now. Hopefully, with time, the things your read in this memory book will bring you some joy. For the past few days some of Dan’s friends have been emailing back and forth memories that they had from Dan’s childhood until his untimely and frankly, unfair passing. Some of these emails were from Dan himself and some were memories from others. What was clear from the memories being shared and even Dan’s own words is how much Dan enjoyed life and how much fun he was to be around. My own experience with Dan is no expection. I laughed at him, I laughed because of him and I laughed with him. I am certain that Dan is in heaven right now either making someone laugh or thinking of prank so that someone will laugh. Hopefully, your memories of Dan will bring your family laughter and happiness.

Barbara and family,
We are so very sorry to hear about Dan. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. God is with you through this today and always.

Dear Barbara & Family –
This end result of such a simple and common injury is unfathomable. Thinking of you everyday from afar and continue to share your story with everyone we know to try to bring some good out of this. Hopefully Dan’s story will help us all help others in the future.

Barbara,
I am so sorry to hear the news. It has been some time, since we have caught up. You, Dan and the kids will be in my thoughts and prayers through out the day and coming weeks. My son TJ and I went to church this morning. We prayed to Dan and asked that he watch over you and the kids. He had a strong spirit in life and that spirit will be with you.

Barbara,
Please know that we are praying for you and the kids everyday. I don’t know you well but my heart is aching just imagining how you must be feeling. We will do whatever we can to help you.

Barbara,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing the sad news. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Dan really was such a great, caring, and fun person. I still remember all of the fun times, shenanigans, and uncontrollable laughter that we shared while working on our first project together at Andersen Consulting. His sense of humor was loved by all.
Love,
Jeff

Barbara,
I remember you introducing Dan to me one long ago day on the Country Club campus and thinking, what a sweet guy. The testimonies here confirm that first impression. I know that someone so close to the angels had a very short trip to heaven, and I can confirm with absolute assurance that his loving spirit will remain alive in your heart and in your beautiful children forever.
Love and prayers,
Charlene McPherson
Barbara,
My heart is so saddened by your loss. You and your children are in my thoughts and prayers. I am here to support and help you when you need me. Don’t hesitate to call for anything.

“May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance” -2 Thessalonians 3-5
May you take comfort in the fact that, even while traveling, Dan always had his wife and family on his mind and in his heart.
During his business trips to San Diego, as far back to when Taylor was a baby, Dan often came over to my house. As we watched TV and played cards, he would talk about you, Taylor Nate and Rachel. You could really tell how much he looked forward to returning home.
I laughed often having Dan as a friend, but I RESPECTED him for being a great father and husband.
With much love,

Dear Barbara and family,
Each morning I wake up with you and your beautiful children first in my thoughts and prayers. We have walked with you in your grief through and behind Sean and Kim’s grief. We have heard so many great stories of you two from our children; but one of the highest compliments was, “Dan was such a great Dad!” We want to add our love, support, and prayers to you and your children now and in the days ahead. We pray that the God of all comfort will comfort you now and always.
Love,

Barbara, Taylor, Nathan & Rachel…
We just returned home and as I read email after email with tears flowing and prayers being said along the way, my heart now aches for you all. We have and will be praying continually for you.
One of my favorite verses is Matthew 7:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and heaven laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
May the Lord be your comfort and you feel the peace of God as you work through this difficult time. I pray we, as the body of Christ, wrap our arms around you so that you feel His presence lifting you up.
Lovingly,
Sharon, Jim, Katelyn & Scott Rodriguez

You are a survivor and you will honor your husband and your children with the strength of God.
I wanted to share a favorite poem of mine that always makes me feel close to my husband.
You will be together again, remember that….
WE DO NOT NEED A SPECIAL DAY
We do not need a special day To bring you to our minds.
The days we do not think of you Are very hard to find.
Each morning when we awake, We know that you are gone.
And no one knows the heartache As we try to carry on.
Our hearts still ache with sadness And secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you No one will ever know.
Our thoughts are always with you, Your place no one can fill.
In life we loved you dearly; In death we love you still.
There will always be a heartache, And often a silent tear.
But always a precious memory Of the days when you were here.
If tears could make a staircase, And heartaches make a lane,
We’d walk the path to heaven And bring you home again.
We hold you close within our hearts; And there you will remain,
To walk with us throughout our lives Until we meet again.
Our family chain is broken now, And nothing seems the same,
But as GOD calls us one by one, The chain will link again.

At a time like this words are hard to find. Your grief is felt in the hearts of those who know and love your precious little family. I just keep seeing my sweet Taylor’s face. All year long in our 1st grade class we spoke of and prayed about death and grieving because of unfortunate and untimely losses in the lives of other families. In hind-sight I believe our gracious Lord was preparing Taylor for this tragic loss of her daddy. I can only express to you that Taylor’s faith in Jesus is enormous and very real in her life. May you find comfort from the Savior that knows and loves her and all of you. Dan’s memory will live on in his circle of family and friends but most of all in the plans that the God has for his three amazing children.
Praying for you around the clock,

To the entire Slarve family,
Words cannot describe the shock and sadness I feel hearing this news about Dan. Please accept my sympathies for all of you. Dan was a good friend in high school, and I know he must have been a good husband and father. What a blessing to have seen him at the 10th reunion. My thoughts and prayers are with you. The poem below always touched me, and in the following days, may it bless you and your family.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
(Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!)

Dear Barbara and Family,
We have known each other since elementary school and have kept up a bit through our mothers who are so close. When I heard this heartbreaking news I was so deeply saddened. Dan was a wonderful person who always made me laugh. He obviously became an amazing husband and father as well, which is no surprise to me. Even though I lost track of him after high school, it was so nice to hear he had popped into your life, and again through your mom, I had a tiny connection to him. The years you spend in school together, for whatever length of time bring you close in a way that spans the distance and time. I cannot claim to have been a close friend, but an impression was made on me in that time, by a unique and warm individual. For those of us who have known Dan, pieces both small and large, but irreplaceable have been lost. My heart and prayers are with all of you, but especially you and your children, Barbara. I cannot begin to imagine your grief. If there is anything I can do down here in S.D., please, please let me know. Hold tight to God with everything you have. My love to you, Shelley ( Rhoads) Skaric, Nick, Nicolas, Joseph, Matthew, and Lucas.
Barbara and your dear little ones…My deep prayers are with you in this tragic loss. I’m in touch with your mom and dad and then I know how better to pray specifically for all of you. I know our Lord will bless you and keep you all in His tender and perfect care . Love and prayers, Patsy Rhoads

I was in Dan’s fraternity and although he was a couple of years older, I always knew him to be friendly and patient. Because he was so caring, he was always chosen to be a “big brother” to someone in every pledge class.
It has been a long time since we have seen each other, but now that I am a father of two, I realize these attributes are what made Dan such a wonderful husabnd and an outstanding father. My family’s thought and prayers go towards the repose of his soul and for God to love and hold his family in His arms.

Barbara,
Thank you for taking time during this difficult period to reach out to let me know of Dan’s passing. He was a valued colleague, a starry eyed dreamer of big things to come, and a proud and devoted father. I’ll miss his friendship, and his valued advice on all things personal and professional – he always seemed wise beyond his years, yet with child like fascination for the world around him. My only comforting thought at this time is that it is the depth, and not the length of life that matters. And Dan lived deeply enough to leave a legacy of 3 beautiful children to live out his dreams for them, and a sea of folks to celebrate his life and time with us…God Bless.

Dear Barbara and kids,
We just read your story in today’s paper and it touched our heart to hear about Dan’s passing, but I’m guessing that God had an opening on his softball team and couldn’t wait for the best player in the world to join his team. Thank you for sharing your story as it shows how such deep sadness can bring a community together to support your family with love and kindness. This is the first time we have donated since 9/11 and I know Dan would appreciate our efforts as he takes the field in that diamond in the sky. Best wishes to your family in these difficult times.
God bless,
Art & Elaine
My thoughts are with you and your family; I nearly lost my wife to the same thing (broken knee due to a Tae Kwon Do injury) 4 years ago.
My deepest sympathies for your loss.
I will hold on strong to the memories I have of Dan. I am lucky to have shared part of my life with his. Driving around looking only to the future as a couple of high school kids in his cherry 1967 white chevy camaro….scalping tickets at the 1993 49er – Oiler game on Christmas morning….our trip to Giants spring training in 1991….good times, good times.
Mrs. Slarve and Family,
We don’t know each other, but I was deeply touched by the story about your husband as I also had pulmonary embolis following surgery and nearly lost my life two years ago. After reading all of the tributes, I see that your husband was an incredibly special person; a good husband, father, friend – all of the things that are important.
It is wonderful to see how the community has embraced your family, so you are not alone. My prayers go out to you, your children and extended family.

I hope this gets to the right place. I have been reading the article, and some of the guestbook entries, and feel like I know Dave. I have never met him. I have never met his family. I’ve never watched “Belly Up” fumble around on the field. But all are in my heart. All. I am reminded of the caring our family received when my father died in 2001. Friends and neighbors, even strangers, came out of the woodwork and held us all up, fed us, entertained us, greived with us and sustained us. I have a heavy and wonderful spot in my heart because of them. There is still pain, yes. I miss him terribly, yes. There will never be another like him, yes. And I now always trust that we are not alone – yes, yes, yes.
Take very special care. Of yourself. Of your loved ones. Of the neighbor that plays their music too loud. Of the grubby dirty young man standing on the freeway off-ramp. Of your pets, your home, your awareness of others. We all have a loved one, no matter how lost we may seem. Someone who cares about us, someone we care about.
Give your time when you can. Money is a tough one, but time is something we can all make. Even a smile, or a wave as we drive through our neighborhhods (go ahead, make somebody search their mind to recall if they KNOW you…) can change one person’s day. Ripples. On to the next, and the next.
The little things – we never see how small they are until the big things come along. And yet, each little thing we share and give IS a big thing to someone. You needn’t give the world to someone to become the world to someone. It only takes a moment of our time.
Hugs at y’all.
Gail
Sorry – I wrote Dave – I meant Dan…
Though I did not know Dan very well at all, I was very touched
to learn of his passing through an old friend from the bay area.
My prayers are with his family, and my applause to the many
that have reached out to Dan’s family during this difficult time.
The love and support I read about being shown is incredible.
May this be a reminder to all of us to not take life for granted.
Barbara, I’m so sorry to hear about Dan. I was just reading through articles online and my eyes did a double take when I read the names…I wondered if it was you and hoped it wasn’t. But when I saw the pictures, I realized it was. It sounds like you have a wonderful support network to help you through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your children.
Sincerely,
darlene
Barbara,
I did not know Dan but I play in the same softball league and was deeply saddened to learn of your loss. I do know that his spirit will live on forever in the hearts and minds of family and friends left behind. You have a beautiful family and that is an inspiration to the rest of us.
You are blessed,
John Belluardo
Thank you all. The love and support our family has received is a wonderful tribute to Daniel. I read the comments and know the kind of person he was. I received a card from a former co-worker and she wrote, “God should have included some unwritten law that children should never die before their parents.” He gave so much and took so little it is very difficult and painful to comprehend he is gone. I was the lucky mother to have shared his 37 years and see how he grew into such a loving father, proud husband, loyal friend, and special son. I will miss Daniels blue eyes always that always sparkled as a little boy, and his pretty blond hair. He lives now through his children and will always be loved and never never forgotten. His brothers Andrew and Alex miss Dan seeing and talking to him every day, and Alex reminds me that life is not fair, Dan was unlucky, and he was cheated of the joys his children and wife gave him daily, I know that he is crying too, I love you son, and miss you terrible! Mom
Although you don’t know me, the Rick Hurd article hit home with me. You see, it was just less than 3 weeks ago that my own husband of nearly 18 years passed away of the very same condition – a pulmonary embolism. He too had piercing blue eyes and was a wonderful man with a loving and generous spirit. My heart aches for you and your family as well as for myself – for I know also what it truly is to love and lose someone so unexpectedly and so unfairly. I will pray for you and your sweet children and thank God for the incredible outpouring of love and family support we’ve both received. God bless.
Barbara, I too was shocked when I first read this story a few days ago. After quite a while, I had again started seeing Dan periodically at the gym. The last time I saw him he invited me to get together for raquetball. And he probably didn’t know how much how I truly appreciated that thought. He was a sincerely kind person, and I’m very sorry that this happened to you, the family, and all the friends.
Barbara, I was deeply touched by the story I read in my local newspaper “Lesson in Kindness.” Being a parent and seeing the photo of you with Nathan, Rachel, and Taylor realy touched my heart. I will keep your family in my prayers and always know that you and the little ones have many angels watching over you.
Barbara and Family,
You and your family have been in our thoughts and prayers ever since we heard of this tragic accident. We just found this website and thought we would share our heartfelt sympathy for your family. Here is a Bible verse that is special to us.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.”
Psalm 46:1-4

Hi Barbara,
This is Esther, Tyler’s mom from Nate’s preschool. I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband. I had no idea. You are so brave and courageous!
Please let me know if there is anyway I can help. I know Tyler loves Nate and would love to have him over…so if you ever want us to watch him, please feel free to ask.
Btw, I am hard of hearing so if you told me, I probably didn’t hear it. So sorry!
We will be praying for your family.
Esther and Tyler
Dear Barbara and Family,
Although we did not know one another please know that you and your family are in our prayers.
We pray that almighty God continues to give you strength, peace and comfort always. A donation from our family has been made to yours to hopefully help you for whatever you may need.

Barbara, family and all who loved Dan,
I have fond memories of Dan, a confident kid with skills at life and on the field. My memories are from ages ago – but they are standing memories that I ache at having to recollect upon following the news of his tragic loss…
His smile was infectious, his humor witty and his presence in a room was felt immediately.
My sincere and heart felt wishes
So wonderful to see the Community around the Slarve family come together in such a fashion.
Peace
Baron Howe
